Karen Whitfield
I live in Exeter with my family and I’ve been teaching Yoga since 2015. I am passionate about the art of Yoga as a personal journey: developing practices and routines according to individual goals and needs; that evolve intelligently and adapt to change.
My training is in the art of Viniyoga, which refers to the application of Yoga to the individual. This means meeting you where you are, at whatever stage of your life and whatever is going on for you right now. Working with you step by step to enable you to move towards where you want to be. This means building things up carefully and attentively, being there for the long haul.
My classes at Thrive are for small groups so that I can maintain a level of personal attention; committing to a block of lessons allows us to build-in progress and work towards goals together. I am looking forward to teaching groups both on and off the mat, offering a study group as well as Āsana (posture) based classes.
Please contact me if you have any questions, and go to my website for more information and to book sessions which will be added as the booking is made available.
Small Group Class
Mondays 13:30-14:30 and 19:30-20:30 (starts Monday 3rd February)
£12 per session, paid in terms.
In these classes we prioritise function over form, with the aim of steadily building strength, mobility and stability. Committing to a block of lessons allows us to build the practice week by week, with time to focus on specific postures or groups of postures, exploring modifications, variations, and integrating movement with the breath. The small group allows me to provide enhanced individual support, meeting you where you are, and making the class accessible to all levels of experience.
This class has a maximum of 6 students to allow for greater personal attention. Your first session can be booked as a drop-in and thereafter paid for as a block.
Joining the group mid-way through a block is possible, please contact me to discuss at karenwhitfieldyoga@gmail.com for more information or for booking enquiries.
Yoga Sutra Study Group
Mondays 20:45-21:30 (starts Monday 3rd February)
£8 per session (or £6 as an add-on to the Monday evening Yoga class), paid in terms.
Are you a Yoga practitioner curious about the teachings and the psychology that underpin this discipline? Have you ever asked what Yoga actually IS rather than just what type of Yoga do you do? Or are you a Yoga teacher who would like to revisit this essential text, to compare notes and share ideas?
The Yoga Sutra was written in around 200CE and consists of 195 densely packed verses which need careful unpicking in order to communicate their meaning. It is both a teaching on the nature of being and a manual on how to work with the mind in order to reduce fear, dissatisfaction and suffering.
In this weekly group we will work through key ideas and verses from the text, focusing on the first chapter in this first term. The first session will be available as a drop-in taster session with the rest of the term requiring booking in a block so that we can move forward together as a group. Open to those with no previous knowledge as well as those who have studied this or other Yoga texts before.
